The 6th ACTL Trial Advocacy Program: Training the Next Generation of Courtroom Advocates

This June, more than fifty aspiring trial lawyers from across the country gathered in New York City for the 6th Annual Trial Advocacy Program, hosted by the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL). The program, led by a distinguished faculty of ACTL Fellows, provided participants with intensive training in courtroom advocacy—helping them sharpen their skills in presenting cases before judges and juries.

The two-day program, chaired by Thomas J. Heiden, brought together a diverse mix of young lawyers from public interest organizations, small firms, and large law practices. Participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations, critiques, and faculty-led workshops designed to strengthen trial skills while reinforcing the importance of ethical, effective advocacy.

This year’s program saw a surge of interest, with more than 100 applicants for just over 50 spots—a reflection of the growing demand for this unique training opportunity. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many calling the program “way better than I could have imagined”, “so helpful for me”, and even “the most diverse group yet.”

The Trial Advocacy Program continues to highlight the ACTL’s commitment to preparing the next generation of trial lawyers to defend the rule of law and preserve the integrity of the judicial system.
